The values for this setting have changed over the last few versions, with the evolution of the algorithm. ![]() And if silence info has been produced, some internal functions will use it even if not explicitly demanded. There was a flaw in 1.16 which invoked silence detection more often than asked for by the settings. Please note, the behavior may have been different in version 1.16. Many books have rather diverging chapter lists in the two files. Why not apply PreferEmbeddedChapterTimes nonetheless? Because there is no guarantee for a 1:1 relationship between embedded AAX chapters and external JSON chapters. The converter will always have enough chapter mark information to run in chapter mode, either from the AAX file itself or the external JSON file. Silence detection with its cue sheet is absolutely needed only for split chapter and split time modes but not for basic chapter mode. This is a task which is relatively slow and shall be avoided if not necessary. Why the distinction at all? It's down to silence detection. To overcome this and get the expected behavior, set VerifyAdjustChapterMarks to "in all conversion modes". The setting of PreferEmbeddedChapterTimes is ignored in this case as no verification/adjustment takes place. ![]() But you also get the timings from there, as VerifyAdjustChapterMarks is not enabled for chapter mode conversion. So, you get the chapter names/titles from there. The NamedChapters setting should look for the JSON file and it did.
